Local maximum entropy shape functions based FE-EFGM coupling

چکیده
In this paper, a new method for coupling the finite element method (FEM) and the element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) is proposed for linear elastic and geometrically nonlinear problems using local maximum entropy shape functions in the EFG zone of the problem domain. These shape functions possess a weak Kronecker delta property at the boundaries which provides a natural way to couple the EFG and the FE regions as compared to the use of moving least square basis functions. In this new approach, there is no need for interface/transition elements between the EFG and the FE regions or any other special treatment for shape function continuity across the FE-EFG interface. Oneand two-dimensional linear elastic and twodimensional geometrically nonlinear benchmark numerical examples are solved by the new approach to demonstrate the implementation and performance of the current approach.

A Coupled Meshless-®nite Element Method for Fracture Analysis of Cracks
This paper presents a coupling technique for integrating the element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) with the traditional ®nite element method (FEM) for analyzing linear-elastic cracked structures subject to mode-I and mixed-mode loading conditions. The EFGM was used to model material behavior close to cracks and the FEM in areas away from cracks. In the interface region, the resulting shape functi...

We present a family of approximation schemes, which we refer to as second-order maximum-entropy (max-ent) approximation schemes, that extends the first-order local max-ent approximation schemes to second-order consistency. This method retains the fundamental properties of first-order max-ent schemes, namely the shape functions are smooth, non-negative, and satisfy a weak Kronecker-delta propert...
متن کاملOn the estimation of the curvatures and bending rigidity of membrane networks via a local maximum-entropy approach
We present a meshfree method for the curvature estimation of membrane networks based on the Local Maximum Entropy approach recently presented in [1]. A continuum regularization of the network is carried out by balancing the maximization of the information entropy corresponding to the nodal data, with the minimization of the total width of the shape functions. The accuracy and convergence proper...
متن کاملLocal maximum-entropy approximation schemes: a seamless bridge between finite elements and meshfree methods
We present a one-parameter family of approximation schemes, which we refer to as local maximumentropy approximation schemes, that bridges continuously two important limits: Delaunay triangulation and maximum-entropy (max-ent) statistical inference. Local max-ent approximation schemes represent a compromise—in the sense of Pareto optimality—between the competing objectives of unbiased statistica...

The moving least-square technique is used to construct shape function in the Element Free Galerkin Method at present, but sometimes the algebra equations system obtained from the moving least-square approximation is ill-conditioned and the shape function needs large quantity of inverse operation. In this paper, the weighted orthogonal functions are used as basis ones, the application in the cal...
